Chapter 14

Woodland Wilding

Southern Lake District

An ancient semi-natural woodland in the South of the Lake District. Why do some of the trees have several trunks? How was this ancient woodland worked in the past? Look carefully and the wood reveals how many industries were here, even into the 1800’s. Almost everything that we used was from wood: houses, carts, ships, baskets, beds, brooms. It was the main fuel too. How busy were these woods during Mediaeval or Victorian times? Now quiet, parts of this woodland are becoming wilder. Perhaps a good thing. But by not being worked, is it losing some wildlife diversity too? What is the ‘best’ path forward?
