Chapter 11

Emplacement

South Devon

A coastal gun emplacement with a rich story. This was built as a defence in a high-tech, European arms race at the beginning of the 1900’s, long before the First World War. Nature is returning to the concrete of the battery, but very slowly. The emplacement is also enveloped by a blackthorn thicket rich with wildlife that uses it for food, shelter and rearing young. This place could be labelled as 'scrub', 'wasteground' or a 'brownfield site', words often used to get an area cleared. I know that development has to happen in our society, yet I'm learning that these thornland sites can be amongst our most important Arks, sanctuaries for our remaining wildlife.
Gun position with habitats. Thornland together with concrete- and tarmac- colonisers. How long for nature to work its wonders and for all parts of this structure to be completely enveloped in these habitats?
